Abstract

This dissertation seeks to discover the effect of video on music, within the realm of music videos. The study began by questioning the value of the music video and its relation to music and its role as an art form. In order to fully appreciate the complex system within music videos, I will analyze the psychological, emotional, and visual features that they contain.

I will begin by discussing the history behind the emergence and dominance of music videos in contributing to visual culture. Subsequently, I will discuss the psychology and theory of video, in order to explain how music videos are perceived. This creates a basis for later use in analyzing case studies.

My final interpretation of the research suggests that the empowerment of music videos is cyclical in nature. The emotional qualities of music enhance those of video; in turn, the visual convention of video embodies the intangible impression of music.
